Last year, the Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau introduced a new subject called Liberal Studies for Primary and Form One students. Many students think the subject is too difficult.

But I think it can help us think more broadly. It can also improve our oral, listening and group discussion skills. This will help us get a good job in future.

Unfortunately, most students are afraid they don't have time to focus on the different topics.

But I think students should try their best in Liberal Studies, because it's a useful subject for life after secondary school.

I agree with you, Yu-ching. I know that when you are under a lot of pressure from tests, revision and homework, you probably wish you could just focus on the traditional curriculum subjects.

But the critical thinking you learn in Liberal Studies will stand you in very good stead. If you decide to go to university, you will be expected to be able to criticise, research and think for yourself.

The subject also teaches you to pay attention to the world around you. You will get to see the bigger picture of how the world works, politically, economically and socially. Besides making you more open-minded, this may also give you the upper hand in building your future.
