Special passes will target children born in 1997

Hong Kong Disneyland plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the handover in July with special annual pass promotions for children born in 1997.

Park managing director Bill Ernest said the promotion would target 10-year-olds from the city and the mainland, and would last more than a month. He declined to reveal more as the government is finalising the celebration plans and will unveil details at the end of this month.

Ocean Park has already announced that any child born in 1997 can get free admission in July and August as part of its celebrations.

Disneyland was in discussions about a possible visit by a top mainland official for the handover celebrations although this was still undecided, Mr Ernest said.

Annual passes for children aged 11 and under are priced between HK$460 and HK$1,250 depending on the benefits.

Since October, about 50,000 annual passes had been snapped up and almost all of the 5,000 premium passes, which have the most benefits, had been sold, Mr Ernest said.

The theme park is expected to have a busy summer. In addition to the handover celebrations, the new Mickey's WaterWorks parade will be launched around July, as will another new attraction, Animation Academy.

An estimated 100 to 150 more staff would be needed as part of the park's expansion, said Dave Vermeulen, vice-president of resort operations.

Andrew Bolstein, director of park operations and industrial engineering, is leaving at the end of the month to take up a new position with Disney in California. Noble Coker, who now looks after IT, will assume his position.

Mr Vermeulen said the move would help the theme park develop talent.
