In their words

Lam Kwan-wah, 39, teacher. Time: 1:48

I have been training by running long distances twice a week around Tuen Mun but nothing prepared me for the humidity. It was really hard to deal with this year. It's the fifth time I have run the race and there are more and more people each year. I was concentrating so hard on running that I didn't notice the air quality.

'Dragon Ball', 27, finance manager. 1:50

This year I was just out to have fun and it worked - people were really nice to me. I wanted to show people they can have fun. I'm not out for competition or to make a time. I went to Pottinger Street yesterday to get my costume and it has worked, people are smiling.

Marco Lam Sui-shing, 35, baggage supervisor. 1:53.51

I've been running twice a week to get my body in shape and this is the sixth time I have run in this race. The weather has been a little strange this year. It was very sticky and uncomfortable. The air today was OK. I am surprised as I believe everyone thought it would be much worse.

Angela Li Wai-yi, manager. 2:00.05

I was feeling confident this year as I've been working hard with my trainer at gym and running Ma On Shan and Bowen Road. Everything was good until we ran into the 10km runners in the Western Harbour Tunnel. You had to push your way through. The pollution was worse last year, but it was pretty hot and humid today.

Thomas Yung Moon-sum, 54, merchant, 1:45.08

It was really hot and humid out there. I definitely struggled a bit, but I'm glad to have completed it OK. It's the fourth time I've run in Hong Kong, but my first attempt at the half marathon. The other times I have run in the 10km. It's always a hard race, but I feel good that I have run over a longer distance and finished without any problems.

Kara Laskowski, 41, housewife, 1:43.31

The first few kilometres were far too crowded and it ruined the race for me. We caught up with those running the 10km and there was just no room for anyone. It's a soulless course, but this made things worse. The pollution is always worst in the tunnels, but we know what to expect by now. I'm using this run as a build-up for Boston.

Carrie Gammons, 40, housewife, 1:43.30

You can see the haze of the pollution when you are running, but if you want to run in Hong Kong you just have to get used to it. I found the humidity to be the worst part of the run, not the pollution. It was very hot. Running over the highway was horrible as well. Macau is a much more enjoyable event.

Chris Gammons, 40, banker, 1:45.11

Mentally and physically it was very tough. The course isn't a good one and the pollution is always a problem, but if you want to run regularly in Hong Kong it's something you have to put up with, so there's not much point complaining about it. What really made things much harder today was the humidity.

Wayne Cheng Wing-ki, 31, teacher, 1:51.12

The organisation of the race was terrible. Hundreds of people got stuck in the Western Harbour Tunnel because they were in the 10km and just taking their time. It held back everyone in the half marathon. It's very frustrating when you spend months training for this event, but you don't get to chance to do your best.

Gloria Tse Shuk-yee, 43, housewife, 2:06.02

The run was far too crowded and I didn't really enjoy it at all. They let far too many people run in the 10km and they were still all out on the route when those running in the half marathon caught up with them. It brought everything to a standstill. I didn't think the pollution was a problem, but the humidity was.
