Newborn abandoned in Causeway Bay
A baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached was abandoned at the entrance of the Po Leung Kuk building in Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, yesterday. He was found wrapped in a towel in a nylon bag at about 3pm. He was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old girl from Oak Street, Tai Kok Tsui, called for medical help, saying she had just given birth. She was sent to Kwong Wah Hospital. Police are investigating.
300 evacuated during gas leak at market
About 300 people were evacuated from a Tseung Kwan O wet market because of a gas leak. Firemen said an call was received just after 1pm when people in Hau Tak Estate wet market complained of a suspected leak. Town Gas workers found a gas pipe had been accidently broken by a worker renovating a shop in the market. The gas company repaired the pipe.
Elderly scavengers trying to help families
A Chinese University survey of 96 elderly scavengers, of whom 85 per cent were women, found 56 lived with their families and scavenged to help them. 'We used to think the elderly scavenged to support their own living, but we found many have to support their children, who earn little and are jobless,' study head Vivian Lou Wei-qun said.

Arson suspected
Police are investigating two suspected arson attacks. The first happened in To Kwa Wan when two cars in San Shan Road caught fire at 1.30am. At about 5am, a motorcycle in Siu Lek Yuen Road, Sha Tin, and another in nearby Kwong Sin Street caught alight.
