What is it? A slash-proof, snatch-proof and tamper-proof tote bag for female travellers. The ToteSafe 100 is the handbag version of an armoured car.
How does it work? The conventional-looking bag hides security tricks up its sleeve. The base and sides are 600-denier nylon and eXomesh, a high-tensile stainless- steel mesh laminated between two fabric layers to withstand slashing by the sharpest blade. Shoulder straps are invisibly reinforced with stainless-steel wire. One strap has a hidden clip mechanism allowing it to be detached and used to anchor the bag to a secure fixture. The bag's zip has a tamper-proof clip that's easy for the owner to operate but a deterrent to pickpockets.
Anything else we should know? Eleven internal pockets mean travel essentials each have a clearly identified home: padded pockets with Velcro straps secure your phone and camera while a detachable key fob ensures your room key can be found quickly. The internal organiser includes space for pens and six credit cards. Items can be kept within easy reach in two external pockets, the rear of which unzips so the tote can be slipped over the handle of a larger piece of luggage. Expandable side pockets can hold water bottles or compact umbrellas. It measures 36cm x 43cm x 11cm, is surprisingly light (650 grams) and comes in black or taupe with a light-coloured interior lining.
Why do I need one? Female travellers are much more likely than males to be the victims of theft. Slashed or snatched bags are common. And apart from its useful security features, the ToteSafe will appeal to travellers who like to keep their valuables organised.
Where can I find it? The ToteSafe 100 costs HK$580. For Hong Kong stockists call Outpacdesign on 2575 0921 or see www.pacsafe.com.
