Hong Kong's annual mini Olympics, the Festival of Sport, will kick off on March 25. And the public is invited to join in the opening celebrations.

The three-month sports extravaganza will start with a Festival of Sport Opening Ceremony at Wan Chai Sports Ground, and complimentary admission tickets are available for the public to collect.

The festival is organised by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong (SF&OC), and sponsored by the Bank of China.

An SF&OC spokesman said the ceremony would be a mini version of major sports events' opening ceremonies.

'It will imitate large-scale international opening ceremonies like the Olympics. Apart from the singers' performances, there will also be dance and trapeze shows performed by local school children, equestrian demonstrations, Capoeira demonstrations and lots more,' he said.

Tickets can now be picked up at the 18 Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) district offices.

Macau rock duo Soler, singer Ella Koon Yun-na and other celebrities will help to kick off the festival. The Olympic-style opening ceremony will include a lion and dragon dance, sports demonstrations and a performance by the Police Silver Band. The event starts at 3pm.

The entertainers - including Ella Koon, Vincent Wong Ho-shun, Renee Dai Mung-mung, Jill Vidal, Charles Ying Cheong-yau, Kenny Kwan Chi-Bun and pop group EO2 - will also compete against elite athletes on the track.

Students will also get the chance to get close to the horses and pose for photos with them.

Festival programme booklets are available at the LCSD district offices or can be downloaded from www.hkolympic.org
