Pro-Am adds fun to the main event

A KNIGHT, an England cricketer, a former Miss Hong Kong and some of the territory's most prominent figures in the fields of business and entertainment will help tee-off the biggest week on the domestic calendar at Fanling this morning.

Sir Gordon Macwhinnie, Dermot Reeve, Olivia Cheng, Alan Tam, Peter Lam and tournament sponsor Raymond Chow are among 108 amateurs taking to the New Course in a Pro-Am that acts as a prelude to the Hong Kong Professional Golfers' Association (HKPGA) GoldenHarvest Invitational.

While the amateurs have their chance of glory, the real work for the 36 professionals begins on Wednesday in the first round of the 72-hole tournament.

Dominique Boulet, on top of the Order of Merit standings, will be anxious to continue his form of late-1993 as he bids for his first PGA crown.

Multi-time national champion Yau Sui-ming and international teammate Richard Kan are expected to be in contention along with Len Sorensen and Discovery Bay Golf Club duo Alex Tang and Tang Man-kee.

The overseas challenge is led by Burma's Kyi Hla Han, Thailand-based Englishman Clive Richardson and Singapore stalwarts Bill Fung and Bill Fua.
