A district party secretary in Shenzhen has been promoted to deputy mayor to assist with preparations for the next Summer Universiade - the world student games - which will be held in the city in 2011.

A source said the appointment of Li Ming , party secretary of Longgang district, to the post was expected to be announced at this week's meeting of the fourth Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress. Mr Li, 52, was named deputy district chief of Longgang district in 2003 and promoted to party secretary in 2005.

Another source said Li Yizhen , the city deputy secretary involved in a political scandal in 2004 for allegedly asking a friend in the education department to pressure schools into forcing their students to watch a movie made by his daughter, would replace Liu Yingli as the first deputy mayor of the city.He Huifeng
