Jiang qualifies for HK team at world champs

Leading women's table tennis player Jiang Huajun has been cleared to represent Hong Kong at the world championships in Zagreb, Croatia.

Jiang, a former member of the China national team, has completed a three-year residency requirement and was named in the squad for the May 21-27 tournament, the last world championships before the Beijing Olympics. The 22-year-old last represented China in the women's World Cup in December 2003.

'Jiang's inclusion will definitely boost the squad as she has become a top-ranked player after moving to Hong Kong,' said Hong Kong coach Li Huifen, who is in Beijing for a training camp. 'We won two bronze medals at the last world event two years ago and we hope Jiang can help us win medals again in Zagreb.'

Jiang, ranked 14th in the world, joins top singles players Tie Yana, ranked seventh, Lin Ling, Zhang Rui and youngster Yu Kwok-see. She will also partner Lin in the doubles and Tang Peng in the mixed doubles.
