Myth Takes

(Warp Records)

A harsher critic might say that !!! have made 10 of them yet still can't spell 'mistakes', but there are a couple of redeeming features here: the noirish title track and Yadnus, a joyous glam-rock stomp.

Although competently executed, the rest of Myth Takes, produced by bassist Justin Van Der Volgen, is a fairly lacklustre affair. A summer of supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers seems to have taken the heat out of the band.

According to !!!'s website, this record threads 'the best bits of the house jams [the eight band members live across the US and convened to rehearse this album in a rented house in Nashville] into a dense sonic patchwork that has as much in common with 70s Jamaican dub as 21st-century club music'.

If by that they're claiming that 70s Jamaican dub and 21st-century club music have as little in common with insipid post-punk-funk filler as each other, then you'd have to agree.

To be fair, if this had been released in the early 80s it would have been rightly hailed as revolutionary.

Unfortunately, it wasn't.

No such excuse can be made for singer Nic Offer. Deprived of the well-lobbed expletives that made the band's last album, Louden Up Now, such a guilty pleasure and unable to impress on a recording with his freaky dancing, Offer is rendered ineffectual; his voice is weedy and his lyrics unable to supply redress. Think a poor man's Michael Hutchence.

The world may well be a global village in which bands can 'stay together' over the Net, but cyberspace has no substitute for the raw power generated by a tight-knit gang. The www's not working for !!!.
