How the world sees it

Donald Tsang

Major overseas media reported the chief executive election result online after it was announced at noon.

CNN.com said incumbent Donald Tsang Yam-kuen had 'trounced his challenger' Alan Leong Kah-kit, while noting that the Election Committee - loaded with tycoons and other members of the elite - had always picked the candidate who has Beijing's blessing'.

The New York Times headlined its report 'Hong Kong leader wins re-election by an expected wide margin', but said the campaign had 'still caught public attention'.

Britain's BBC said the high public approval ratings enjoyed by Mr Tsang were partly due to the economy's buoyancy. It quoted correspondents saying that while Mr Tsang may be in favour now, many people were growing increasingly impatient for democratic reform.

Xinhua issued a brief report saying Mr Tsang had won with more than 80 per cent of the vote.
