'Eating to excess; the over-indulgence and over-consumption of food and drink or intoxicants to the point of waste'.

Who mentioned intoxicants? Hey, we all know Sevens weekend is that time when too much is just not enough. Yes, there are tons of food devoured and the queues at the concession stands never seem to shorten but 'eat, drink and be merry (with some rugby thrown in)' has long been the unofficial motto. Remember, one of the more enduring images in the 1990s was the huge, wobbly belly of the Pieman, Englishman Martin Hollis, who became the most sung-at individual in the history of Sevens fandom, purely on the strength of his gi-normous gut. But much as we wolf down fast food to our hearts' and stomachs' content, the real excess occurs in the liquid beverages department. The beer girls are among the hardest-working people ferrying trayloads of the amber nectar. And their work is not for naught as the collective spirit always improves as the tournament goes on. Sinful or not, that's worth drinking to.
