Humming a few bars

The bars of Wan Chai hum all week during Sevens time and are the source of many of the original seven deadly sins. Gluttony, lust, wrath and sloth among them! Just say to any taxi driver 'Joe Bananas' and you will find yourself at the gateway to oblivion. Bar workers do their best to keep thirsty players and fans fed and watered during a week that many will neither forget nor remember in a hurry. So, mindful of the sinful pitfalls ahead, here's our essential guide to the top watering holes and eateries, in walking order:

1) Joe Bananas: If Hong Kong cabbies had a knowledge test like London's, then this is one bar they would surely all know. An institution that's packed to the rafters on the Sunday of the Sevens with players and punters swaying in the plastic palm trees like Gilligan on his Island.

2) Mes Amis: It was good enough for Martin Johnson last year, where he was seen pulling up a stool for a quick beer during his week on the pre-Sevens guest-speaking circuit. The corner vantage point is perfect for people-watching.

3) Amici: Upstairs from Mes Amis and owned by the same people. They not only have a bar but they serve the best pizzas in town.

4) The Canny Man: In the basement of the Wharney Guangdong Hotel (next door to Carnegies), this great Scottish pub has an extensive selection of whiskies, a pool table and a big screen for rugby telecasts. A great option for a venue to watch the games if you can't get tickets and somewhere fun but more civilised than your usual Wan Chai bars.

5) Carnegie's: Like an extension of the South Stand. Dancing on the bar is the main attraction here. Players and squads of dressed-up fans continue the fun into the wee hours.
