Boks 'have what it takes'
South Africa have all the attributes to carry off the Cup final today, says playmaker Stefan Basson.
They were in ruthless form as they dispatched Tonga and Wales in pool B to advance to the quarter-finals. After a bruising 31-12 win over Tonga, the Springboks proved too fast for the Welsh, running out 31-0 victors.
Basson, who scored four tries yesterday, said the team were raring to add Hong Kong to their trophy cabinet for the first time.
'The team are really positive,' he said. 'It has been a very good second day, we are playing well and the boys are really into winning in Hong Kong. They want to make it a big performance.
'This year the team has the right balance. We have the experience, the pace and everything you need to win a sevens tournament.'
South Africa, who won the opening leg of the IRB Serries in Dubai, meet Tonga again in the quarter-finals today. But coach Paul Treu said they were making too many mistakes and warned his team against complacency.
'I am happy that we scored the points, not particularly about the performance,' Treu said.
'Against Tonga we had a tough game and it took a lot out of the players. Wales couldn't score, even when we had six players on the field, and we even managed to score. That was a positive.
'But we are conceding too many turnovers, not holding onto our final passes; it is still something we need to work on. It is the teams that make the least mistakes that win tournaments.'
Treu said the return of Basson had given the team a boost when he was able to get involved.
'Stefan is getting there, he had a brilliant game against Tonga, but in the second game the ball didn't get to him,' he said. 'It is important for Stefan to organise the players around him so they can detect when he has the ball in hand.'
