NEWS just in about erstwhile man-about-town Mel Tobias who, having recently suffered an acute attack of the 1997 blues, is now domiciled in Vancouver.

  Tobias, who was well-known in media circles, hasn't wasted much time in getting a radio perch in his new home town.

  He's host of a Saturday night music programme on New Coast 104 AM, Vancouver's fledgling station which, we understand has a large following among woopies (well-off older people).

  With this in mind, Tobias tells us that his show features oldie music from around the world. ''They want to listen to music from their youth,'' he explains, ''but they also don't want to wallow in memories''.

  Quite right. After all nostalgia is not what it used to be.
