Single mum's free haircuts sum up community spirit at school

It is not just underprivileged children who benefit at the Fresh Fish Traders' School - parents also can improve their lives.

Parent volunteers can be seen everywhere on the school grounds.

One is Ms Wan, more commonly known among parents and teachers as the mother of Mok Sum-yi, a girl who is in Primary Four.

The single mother, who migrated to Hong Kong four years ago, has been offering free haircuts to the children for almost a year.

Pupils queue up for her service in a covered playground every Wednesday, sitting on a bench and patiently waiting for their turn.

'I am glad that I can help cut these children's hair. I am also happy that I can practise more and now and I have become more confident in my skills,' Ms Wan said.

'I feel so happy that they keep coming back to me and ask me to cut their hair, as I know they must be very happy about my work. I also get to know many other parents who also volunteer to offer their services to the school.

'We are like a big family. Though my daughter and I have moved to Kwun Tong, my daughter insists on studying at this school. I love this school, too, and children here really need me to cut their hair, so I let my daughter continue her studies here.'

Many children studying at the school are from families on welfare. Having a haircut might not be a problem for most people, but it can be a burden for these families.

'I understand their difficulties because my income is unstable too and I only have a part-time job,' Ms Wan said.

'It is good that the skill I learned at a community centre can be a great help for these poor children.'

Confidence floods through the usually shy mother whenever she picks up her scissors.

'The busiest time is around the Lunar New Year when many kids want to have a haircut, and I have to keep cutting from 3pm to 6pm.

'At first I only came every two to three months. But one time I asked some children how come their hair was so long, and they said they had not had a haircut for months - since I last cut their hair. Then I decided to come every Wednesday.'
