Unbeaten Fukien gunning for revenge
Fukien will be looking for revenge when they take on Winling in the Senior Shield final at the MacPherson Stadium tonight. Having lost 3-2 to their opponents in the A1 Division play-off finals series last season, Fukien are eager to make amends, and are unbeaten in the Shield competition this season.
Winling, meanwhile, lost to South China in the second round, but recovered quickly when the two sides met again in the losers' pool. Winling won that semi-final encounter 74-64. But if Winling want to capture the title, they need to beat Fukien twice after coming through from the losers' pool.
Fukien have been weakened in the rebounds department following the retirement of towering centre Sung Fong during the close season, but they still boast a number of top players, including Hong Kong captain Li Wai-lun, three-point shooter Yung Kam-wah, Lui Chor-wai, Chung Ming-tat and Choi Fong-yue. They have also secured the services of Wong Chi-wai and Tse Man-chun to strengthen the squad.
Winling will have to bank on the skills of their captain Poon Chi-ho - widely regarded as the best player in Hong Kong - if they are to win the title. Also on their roster are Hong Kong team members Yung Man-tik, Fong Shing-yee, Li Kiu-fung and Ng Wah-fung.
In the women's final, Fukien, also from the winners' pool, will be challenged by Bank of China in tonight's double header.
