NY fashion boss knows how to take it easy
For the international creative director of a burgeoning fashion conglomerate, Richard Hand is surprisingly easygoing. 'If you're uptight, other people are uptight,' he said. The New Yorker oversees Global Retail's umbrella of labels and was in town for Monday's EQ:IQ spring-summer preview at the Bethanie Hall. The French label is one of many on Global Retail's growing roster.
Criss-crossing the globe is hard work, but Hand takes it all in his stride and enjoys going to new places. 'I travel here four times a year,' he said. 'The fact that I get to come and learn about the culture is amazing. I know it's frivolous, but I am amazed by the shopping here. My first impression is they don't need another brand, but there's always a need for a new buzz and excitement.'
Among the labels Hand will be working to bring here soon include Monkey Brand bathroom products, Karen Millen, Easy Spirit shoes and Nine West clothing. Although he has a lot on his plate, Hand is far from bossy. 'When you work international you can't be a micro-manager.'
