Till the End of the World

Mere Independent Artists

1a space

Apr 10-29

This debut art exhibition by Mere Independent Artists (MIA) is a response to what the group sees as the greatest threat to cultural diversity and individuality: globalisation. The title refers to the participating artists' perseverance in creating something uniquely theirs until the very end.

Running from next Tuesday until the end of the month, Till the End of the World is curated by artist Stella Tang Ying-chi and will showcase paintings, sculptures and installations by artists Yvette Fung Suk-ha, Monti Lai Wai-yi, Carol Lee Mei-kuen and Tang Ying-mui. What binds them is a strong sense of character and individualism.

'They insist on producing works in their own style,' says assistant curator Ivy Chan Ka-yi. The works offer a 'fairly good idea of their distinctive artistic style'.

Fung's art is characterised by a Frankenstein-like working process. She first produces a painting, then cuts it to shreds and pastes it back together. 'Mending ... is about destruction and irreversible damage,' says Chan. 'Once something has been taken to pieces, even after you put everything back together, it's not the same. This is Fung's social commentary about our city, which is constantly undergoing destruction.'

Lai's Here They Come Again (above) is playful, comprising 300 figurines in camouflage uniforms. Lai says they're 'fairies and elves', who hide and spy. Chan says they'll 'be scattered all over the venue, watching the visitors watching them'.

Lee's Everlasting of Flowing Water (detail, right) explores the passage of time, a theme that runs through much of her art. 'The work symbolises the life cycle and regeneration,' Chan says. 'When something dies, a new life will begin elsewhere.'

Tang Ying-mui's installation, An Invitation from the Prehistoric Time - Shelter Series, addresses a practical concern of many Hong Kong people: finding a home. Tang used industrial tape and wire to create shelters of different sizes.
