Airborne adventures

Air Gear (TV series)

A new generation of daredevils will soar through the skies in a new anime debuting on the Animax channel on April 16.

Air Gear is an original manga by mangaka (comic artist) Ogure Ito. Some of his other works include the Tenjho Tenge series and some of the alternate costumes for the PS2 version of 3D fighting game Tekken 5.

Handling the anime production is TOEI, which has over three decades of experience in bringing anime to the small screen. TOEI has produced such classics as Dragonball/Z/GT, Candy Candy, Captain Tsubasa, and Getta Robo.

More recent productions include the Digimon series and Yu-Gi-Oh!.

In Air Gear, the hero Itsuki 'Ikki' Minami is the junior high school bad boy. Orphaned when he was very young, Ikki lives with his foster family, the Noyamano sisters.

As the leader of the Higachuu Guns, the cocky 14-year-old has always been a thorn in the side of rival gangs from the other side of town.

But then he meets the Skull Saders, a ruthless gang of rollerbladers with motorised skates called 'Air Treck' (AT) that allow them to fly.

When Ikki gets beaten to a pulp and humiliated by the Skull Saders, he steals his foster sister's AT to get revenge. Thrilled by the sensation of flying, Ikki becomes a 'Storm Rider', an AT user who fights other AT users.

But even as Ikki aspires to become the best Storm Rider, other challengers are getting ready to wage war on him and his friends.

Can Ikki out-trick and out-fly the competition to become the Sky King? Watch this fun, exciting and often amusing anime to find out.
