Drugs clerk arrested over thefts

Police have arrested a member of the dispensary at Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long for stealing HK$8,000 worth of drugs on 10 occasions.

The drugs were mainly for cholesterol or high blood pressure, a police spokesman said yesterday.

Chief Inspector Eric Wong Kai-chung said Yuen Long police were still working with the Hospital Authority to find out whether any other drugs were stolen.

'No evidence suggested the stolen drugs had been sold,' he said. 'We're still investigating the motive.'

Detectives from Yuen Long police station began their investigation after March 7, when Pok Oi Hospital officials reported the alleged theft to police. They had discovered discrepancies between prescriptions dispensed and the hospital's records.

Chief Inspector Wong said officers were still investigating whether any prescriptions or computer records had been amended.

'Preliminary investigation revealed that a small amount of drugs was stolen each time,' he added.

On March 19, officers arrested the 50-year-old dispensary worker in connection with the theft.

Police said no stolen drugs had been recovered in the case and investigations were continuing.

The suspect was released on bail of HK$2,000 pending further investigation.

He has to report back to Yuen Long police station next week.
