Malaysian drug mules arrested in Guangdong
Guangdong customs have arrested five Malaysian women suspected of carrying drugs into the country and deported two of the couriers believed to be working for Nigerian drug traffickers in Kuala Lumpur.
Two of the women were caught by sniffer dogs at the Zhuhai immigration checkpoint, one in Shantou and another at Baiyun International Airport as they entered the country with drugs hidden in their bags and clothes, a source said.
Two of the couriers, suspected to be working for Nigerian men who befriended them in Kuala Lumpur, were deported last week because they were pregnant. The anti-narcotics section of the Guangdong Public Security Bureau declined comment.
The women, aged between 23 and 33, said they thought they were carrying Chinese herbs and were promised US$5,000. Some were promised marriage with the Africans.
The sister of one of the women arrested, Thilagavathy Varatharaju, said from Kuala Lumpur that her sister told her to get in touch with an African named 'Mr Smith' after she was arrested. 'She told me to call the person who sent her but he has disappeared,' Mages said.
Her sister was caught on February 9 with 688 grams of heroin, and formally arrested on March 3. She is at the No1 Detention House in Zhuhai. The woman caught at Baiyun had 641 grams of heroin.
Another flew to Shantou from Bangkok with 2.98 kg.
Two other Malaysians were arrested for drug offences in Guangdong in the first three months of the year. At least 20 Malaysian women are believed to have been sent to countries including Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam.
