Activities for the children

Elisa Fung's six-year-old daughter Cheryl Lum is keen on Mother's Day. This year, she's been working hard to give mum another surprise.

'I don't know what it is yet, but I've been seeing her running around for weeks, wrapping this, wrapping that,' Ms Fung said.

Cheryl's creativity in designing gifts seems endless, but if your children need inspiration there are a few things you can sign them up for.

As part of the Peninsula Kid's Academy programme, The Peninsula Hong Kong (Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 23153146 / 23153140) will organise a cooking class for up to 10 children aged between six and 12 at 10.30am on May12.

Executive pastry chef Chan Wai will teach the young students chocolate creations, which they can bring home as Mother's Day gifts. The HK$650 per person tuition fee includes light breakfast and beverages, as well as a monogrammed Peninsula Kid's Academy apron as a souvenir.

Two special cake decorating classes for children will be held at the Elm and Pine harbour view function rooms at the InterContinental Hong Kong (18Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 23132323) on May12 from 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-3.30pm, taught by the hotel's executive pastry chef Pascal Schwalm and his team. Seats are limited to 30 per class, so booking is essential. The children will get to decorate their own one-pound strawberry mango cream cake with a choice of colourful icing and toppings and take it home to mum. Priced at HK$288 per child, including mini breakfast pastries or afternoon mini sandwiches and cookies, fresh fruit, juice, milk and a children's gift bag featuring the hotel's branded stuffed rabbit.

Or try Cafe Vienna's (50Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 23693111 ext 1321) gourmet Flavours of the World buffet at lunch (a globe-trotting culinary spread that includes Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, French, Spanish, Scandinavian and American cuisines, HK$228 for adults and HK$136 for children and elderly guests). If you have four or more people and are among the first 20 bookings at the restaurant, your young ones will get to decorate their own Mother's Day cake. A complimentary cosmetic gift set by Estee Lauder will be given to all women. The world buffet is also available at dinner (without the cake-making class), first sitting HK$288 per adult and HK$172 per child and second sitting HK$358/HK$214 respectively, with a complimentary bowl of abalone and dry conpoy soup for every guest.

Probably few Mother's Day gifts are as good as showing her that you are talented, or trying to be. While enjoying a lavish lunch buffet (HK$318 per adult and HK$198 per child) in the Star Room (Level42, Langham Place Hotel, 555Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, 35523366) one child from every table gets five minutes on stage to sing, play musical instruments or recite poems.
