Just as the toothpaste brand Darkie has been changed to the more politically correct Darlie, so Chinky has been renamed Cinky.

A number of readers had written to the South China Morning Post to complain about its resemblance to a racial epithet, and now distributor Hin Sang Hong says the name has been changed. However, it will not recall packages that have already been shipped out.

We shouldn't be too hard on the company. It was, after all, an honest mistake; Chinky, it says, is a direct transliteration of the Chinese chin kin, which means tooth health. The company is trying to trademark the new name.
