Lee breaks hand in crash
Pole sitter Marchy Lee Yin-kin has received a cruel blow in the Formula V6 by Renault series after breaking his hand at Sepang yesterday.
Lee had been fastest in qualifying and was favourite in the grand final only to crash out on the first corner after making contact with fellow Hong Kong driver Adderly Fong. The race also put paid to the hopes of Karl Reindler, Armaan Ebrahim, Ken Lee and teenager Fong.
'I wasn't fighting for the lead because I was already in front as the pole sitter. I'm really disappointed that the race had to end this way. It shouldn't have happened,' said a disappointed Lee.
Lee's front tyre was nudged by Fong and the Hong Kong driver spun out on to the track in the path of incoming traffic. Lee's car was hit by four other cars, leaving his right hand fractured by the impact.
Lee didn't take part in the latest rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup, also in Sepang, because he was unable to find a sponsor, although he plans to take part in future Porsche races. 'I don't know how long it will take to heal this injury. My next races are in another five weeks so it's going to be touch and go for me. I have been unlucky, but I think it will be OK in the end. I am still happy I got pole position,' he said.
Fong was apologetic for his aggressive move on the inside of Lee, which led to the pile-up.
'I made a move for a corner that wasn't there. It was my mistake and I am so sorry,' Fong said.
The race had to be restarted after a 20-minute delay, allowing for some of the teams to make quick repairs to the cars and at the restart, Seth Ingham pulled away from the pack to claim an uninterrupted win.
