Paying homage

Devotees in Fat Tong Mun off Clear Water Bay in Sai Kung burn incense sticks and make offerings yesterday to pay homage to Tin Hau, goddess of the sea, whose birthday festival is today - the 23rd day of the third month of the lunar year. Thousands of worshippers across the territory observed the festival, as young and old burned joss sticks and offered roast suckling pigs and fruit to the goddess to thank her for past protection of sailors and fishermen and pray for future luck. The oldest temple, built in Joss House Bay in 1266, will draw up to 6,000 visitors - about half the number of 10 years ago.
