Stars on the right track
Aspiring track and field stars displayed their talents at a competition aimed at promoting sports among young people.
The Bank of China (Hong Kong) 50th Festival of Sports IAAF World Athletic Day and Open Meet 2007 was held at the Wan Chai Sports Ground on Sunday.
In the women's hammer throw, Lee Ka-shun broke the Hong Kong junior record with a throw of 39.12 metres - 0.46m more than the previous mark.
A team of junior girls from Watson's Athletic Club (WAC) broke both the senior and junior records with a time of 20 minutes, 38.80 seconds in the 4x1,500m relay.
With the absence of sprint kings Tang Yik-chun and Lai Chun-ho, there was fierce competition in the men's 100m dash. Wong Ka-chun won the race in 10.57 seconds, followed by Lau Yu-leong (10.58 seconds), and Chiang Wai-hung (10.64 seconds).
In the women's 100m, Wan Kin-yee remains unchallenged as the sprint queen. The SAR record holder won the women's final in 12.01 seconds.
Although Chan Ho-yee took the lead at the beginning of the race, Wan caught up with her in the final 40m and sprinted to victory. Chan came second with a time of 12.12 seconds.
Tang Hon-sing beat Lo Ngai-fung to win the men's 110m hurdles in 14.42 seconds - just 0.1 second shy of his Hong Kong record.
The festival was co-organised by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association.
