These banks and fields of salt create a surreal landscape by Lake Caka, high in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The 100 sq km lake has 450 million tonnes of salt reserves, mined commercially since 1950. The salt is sold in China and exported, but decreased rainfall and desertification due to overgrazing, industrial development and tourism are causing the lake to shrink.
