A migrant worker was driven to kill her five-year-old daughter by fear of an abusive husband and worries that she could not afford medical fees after she beat the child unconscious, Huizhou police said.

The young mother from Anhui province, only identified by her surname Du, admitted killing Wang Mengyu, on May 12, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

She said she had been angry with her because she could not count from one to 100, and had slapped her across the face. The girl went to the toilet afterwards and fell down, but Du slapped her again, causing her to lose consciousness.

Huizhou police said Du failed to revive her daughter and began to fear that she would be beaten by her husband.

As she had no money to take her daughter to a doctor, she smothered the girl with clothes.

Fan Changhe, a mental disease expert at Guangdong People's Hospital, said: 'If Ms Du had had money to treat the daughter, or her husband had never roughed her up, the tragedy could have been avoided.'

After putting the body in a box and throwing it away in Sandong, a neighbouring town, Du called her husband and told police she had lost the child in a shopping mall. The family posted missing persons notices across the city and offered a reward of 50,000 yuan.

But police said Du did not co-operate with them during the investigation and had left her home after the body was recovered and cremated. After police pressed her to confess, she finally admitted the murder.
