Let's save the world we already have

I read that scientists think they may have found a planet similar to Earth that is suitable for living organisms. It's very exciting to think that one day we might be able to build a new home.

But if we go to this planet because we need to, instead of to fulfil our desire for exploring the unknown, it means we have destroyed our natural environment. I don't believe that we would be able to live on this new planet without also damaging the environment there. It would become just another cycle of destruction.

Luckily, there are people who care about Earth. They are trying to save the world we already have. I want my home to be clean - don't you?

Thanks for your letter, Joseph. I, too, read the story about an Earth-like planet with great interest.

According to the French-led mission, the planet they've spotted is bigger than Jupiter and is a very hot world.

It's exciting to think that this planet has been spotted in the first few months of the mission. The mission has another two and a half years to run and will observe more than 100,000 stars - so they may yet find more habitable worlds.

But I completely agree with you, Joseph, that our first priority must be to look after our own planet.
