It looked a competitive race on paper but Grand Commands and Doleuze turned it into a one-horse affair, leading from the jump and clearing out to score by 31/2 lengths. This was the fourth year of sponsorship by the SCMP Group and Valiente told guests at the invitation-only function on the eighth floor that it further underlined the group's commitment to the most popular sport in Hong Kong. The eight-race programme saw leading jockey Douglas Whyte's comfort margin reduced by one, with Brett Prebble and Doleuze riding a winner each while the six-time champion went home empty-handed.
