Starbrook keen on Euro trip
NATIONAL coach David Starbrook has in mind one of the most ambitious training programmes ever undertaken by the Hong Kong Judo Association - to take a six-strong team to Europe ahead of the Asian Games.
''The association should apply to the Sports Development Board for a grant to send players to France for training,'' said Starbrook at the end of a selection tournament at the Mei Lam Indoor Games Hall in Sha Tin yesterday.
''This trip is very important to our players because it would give them a chance to learn the European style.'' At yesterday's event, teenager Wat Tze-wan beat seasoned international Alex Lee Kan on a decision in the men's under 60-kilogram category in the major upset of the day.
In the women's under 52-kg final, Taiwan-based Yu Wai-seung felt she was ''robbed'' when the umpire proclaimed Chan Mei-ling the winner, but was resigned to the umpire's decision.
''I am very pleased with my performance and thought I had won it but then the umpire's decision is final and I would only have to accept it,'' said Yu with tears streaming down her cheeks.
