Fifty-two girls from the Ninth Secondary School in Ningbo , Zhejiang , and their parents protest outside the municipal education department office on Tuesday, saying they have been swindled by the school.

They said it had promised to give the girls certificates after they completed a three-year English course, and ensure their entry into a nursing college. But now they have been told they are not qualified to take part in the college entrance exams, they said.

The students also petitioned the municipal government office yesterday, and 100 police officers prevented them from entering the building. Two girls and one pregnant parent said they were beaten by police when officers detained a passerby who took a photograph of their protest. The students vowed to continue petitioning until authorities solved their problem.
