Collapsed tree poised to smash houses

A 20-metre rubber tree that collapsed after heavy rain yesterday was poised last night to destroy three houses in Tso Wo Hang, Sai Kung, one owned by director Johnnie To Kei-fung, if further bad weather caused it to slip from the retaining wall it was perched on. The tree collapsed at 4.15pm after thunderstorms swept the city, dumping 30mm of rain on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the northern New Territories. The Observatory issued amber rainstorm warnings at 4.35am and 2.45pm. Wind gusts reached 90km/h. One of the owners of the endangered houses said she was still waiting late last night for workers to arrive to make the houses safe.
