Callow arrives late but form shows he's ready, willing and Able

Murray Bell

Noel Callow made a belated arrival yesterday afternoon in Tokyo to ride Able One in the Yasuda Kinen, but at least he'll be arriving in peak form, having landed the Group One Patrons Bowl at Singapore racecourse on Friday. Callow, 32, rode My Royal Captain and looked certain to run second when Echague (Barend Vorster) went straight past him in the straight. But Callow sat down and rode My Royal Captain out with inspired strength, clawing back the margin and ultimately getting My Royal Captain's head in front right on the line.

'Noel is a very good jockey and extremely strong,' said Robbie Fradd, who is also in Tokyo to ride the Caspar Fownes-trained The Duke.

Fradd, the champion jockey of Hong Kong in 2000, trails Callow by 17 wins in the Singapore jockeys' championship. Callow has ridden 42 winners from 166 rides, a strike rate of 25.3 per cent.

Callow went straight into the Japan Racing Association's jockey lock-up last night, and the first he will see of his Yasuda Kinen mount will be in the mounting yard this afternoon.
