THE first of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals to be staged in the territory, Cats, got off to the purrfect start last night in front of a star-studded audience gathered at the Academy for Performing Arts.

Taking in the dazzling lighting, the hi-tech stage effects, the razor-sharp choreography and the music familiarised by a thousand airings were Sir Run Run Shaw, Gordon Wu, Donald Tsang, Selina Chow, Michael Cartland, Christine Loh, Martin Lee, Flora Cheong-Leen and Cecil Chao, to name but a few among the 400 guests.

Last night's gala premiere was hosted by David Hong, managing director of Swank, whose company is the title sponsor for the production.

Welcoming his guests to the pre-theatre supper held in the cattily decorated Grand Hyatt ballroom, Hong stressed that his company's involvement with Cats was a further step in its commitment to the development of the arts in Hong Kong.

The musical begins its official 14-week season tonight.
