Switch off your air conditioner and save the Earth

I haven't turned on the air conditioner although it's summer. I want to fulfil my responsibility towards society and help my family save money.

My brother can't stand hot weather. He always turns on the air conditioner in the afternoon and at night.

Sometimes, I do my homework in his room while he is playing computer games. Then I can enjoy air-conditioning without turning on my air con.

I will only turn on the air con when it's really hot. I leave it on for about an hour. After I cool down, I use a fan instead.

Thanks for your letter, Suki. It's great to hear that you are so aware of your energy consumption and have such a responsible attitude towards helping protect the environment. I agree, where possible, fans are a great alternative to air conditioners - and they're much better for your complexion as they don't dry your skin out.

We all contribute to global warming every day. A really interesting thing to do is to calculate your 'carbon footprint' - and find out how much Co2 you emit each year.

Al Gore - An Inconvenient Truth - has a great website. Check out www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/ and you can find out what impact you have on the planet. I did it - it's scary, but it makes you much more aware.
