Doors to social work career open to public

THE Division of Humanities and Social Science of the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong is organising a ''Diploma in Social Work'' Day on Sunday.


''This is a kick-off event for all the marketing activities to be held in 1994 to prepare potential candidates who intend to pursue studies in social work,'' said Mrs Agnes Yeung, Head of the Division.


''We aim to recruit suitable students. The demand for social services is ever increasing because of rapid social change and the subsequent fast-changing social problems. Hence, there is an urgent need to strengthen social service training, to ensure moregraduates of the same high standard.'' The course ''Diploma in Social Work'' is specially designed to meet the public demand.


''Its objective is to equip the graduates with basic social work knowledge, technical know-how, and a suitable value system, so that they are capable of providing a wide variety of front-line social services,'' Mrs Yeung added.


In order to allow, not only potential students but also the general population, to gain a comprehensive picture of the course, the ''Diploma in Social Work'' Day will be open to the public.


An exhibition-cum-video show will he held from 1.30 pm until 6.00 pm and a lecture demonstration and aptitude test will also be conducted. Visitors will be shown around all of the learning and amenities facilities at City Polytechnic.


Graduates will be present to share their experience with the visitors.


A course handbook highlighting the characteristics of the course will be distributed free on the occasion.


After attending the ''Diploma in Social Work'' Day, visitors will have an idea of the course structure, syllabus, teaching/learning method, student and lecturer relationships, career possibilities and professionalism of social work.
