The mainland's senior Foreign Ministry official in Hong Kong yesterday warned lawmakers against complaining overseas about the city's affairs.
Lu Xinhua, Commissioner of the Office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, said although lawmakers were free to complain overseas about the pace of democratisation, doing so was not helping.
He also said it was unnecessary for foreign countries, including Britain and the United States, to compile reports on post-handover Hong Kong. 'All affairs involving Hong Kong are the domestic affairs of China. They are not for foreigners to make irresponsible comments about,' he said.
Mr Lu said Hong Kong people could play a bigger role internationally. He cited the election of Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun last year as head of the World Health Organisation as showing that Beijing would nominate Hong Kong people to lead world bodies.
