What is red, gold and expensive? Why, the Caran d'Ache Collection Privee Hong Kong Fountain Pen, of course. To mark the 10-year anniversary of Hong Kong's handover, 1997 pieces have been made of this striking creation by renowned local architect Tao Ho, who designed the Bauhinia flag. Chinese characters, signifying 'One country, two systems', are embossed in brass and plated gold; the spaces between have been filled in by hand with Chinese lacquer. The pen comes with an 18-carat-gold nib with rhodium coating - available in fine, medium or broad tip - and cartridge-filling system. The Caran d'Ache name has been a hallmark of quality since 1924.

The final eight pens are on sale for HK$39,800 each at the Caran d'Ache stores in The Peninsula Hotel Arcade, Tsim Sha Tsui, and the IFC Mall, Central. Private viewings can be arranged upon request; tel: 2369 1620.
