Top PLA hospital, university join forces
Beijing's No301 Military Hospital, famous for treating the mainland's top leaders, announced yesterday that it was teaming up with Tianjin's Nankai University to train medical students and collaborate on scientific research.
The hospital's political commissar, Major-General Wen Degong , said at a signing ceremony that the collaboration would help complement the strengths of the two institutions.
The ceremony was attended by National People's Congress Standing Committee vice-chairwoman He Luli , senior officials from the ministries of education and science and technology, People's Liberation Army officers and Tianjin mayor Dai Xianglong .
The hospital, officially called the People's Liberation Army General Hospital, has treated such state leaders as Mao Zedong , Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping .
It was most recently reported that former vice-premier Huang Ju , who died earlier this month after a long illness, had been receiving treatment there since April.
General Wang said the hospital's treatment of state leaders was 'not included in the co-operation projects'.
However, Nankai president Rao Zihe , an Oxford-educated biologist who helped decode the Sars virus, said the university's medical school would become the breeding ground for the personal doctors of future state leaders.
'I wouldn't be surprised to see our medical students becoming doctors for the leaders in 10 or 20 years' time. We'll be very proud of this,' he said.
