Cancer drug improves chances
A new drug for treating colon cancer has been proved to improve chances of survival, the Anti-Cancer Society revealed yesterday. An international study showed a chemotherapy regimen based on the drug oxaliplatin lowered the risk of dying by 4.4 per cent compared to conventional treatment adopted after surgery. The study also recorded a drop of 5.9 per cent in the risk of relapse among patients tested after three years. The drug costs about HK$100,000 for six months.
Tip-off leads to drug haul
Police acting on a tip-off arrested a couple, aged 27, and seized quantities of the illegal drugs cannabis, ketamine and Ice worth more than HK$33,000 from a house in Shui Tau Tsuen, Yuen Long.
Drink-driving suspect held
Police arrested a man, 47, on suspicion of drink-driving after he failed to stop following a collision with a taxi in Ngan Shing Street, Sha Tin. He was unhurt. The taxi driver, 52, and his woman passenger suffered minor injuries.
Shattering glass cuts girl
A seven-year-old passer-by suffered minor injuries when a bottle thrown from a flat on a Chai Wan public housing estate shattered beside her. She was treated at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for cuts to her forehead.
Bus drivers threaten to strike
Representatives of drivers for the city's three main bus operators threatened to stage co-ordinated industrial action after the latest round of negotiations on a pay rise ended without agreement.
Motorcyclist crashes into railings
A motorcyclist was injured when he crashed his bike into railings in Tung Lo Wan Road, Causeway Bay, at 4.30am. The man, 28, was treated at Ruttonjee Hospital.
Fisherman hurt in fall
A mainland crewman suffered minor injuries when he fell into the hold of a fishing boat off Tung Lung Chau, Sai Kung. The 41-year-old was taken to hospital with chest pain.
