Fan Xiaojian has been named head of the State Council's Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, just two months after he was appointed a deputy head, state media reported yesterday. Mr Fan, 54, is also a deputy agriculture minister but it was not clear whether he would retain that post.

According to Chinese Personnel News, Mr Fan's predecessor, Liu Jian , 63, has stepped down. Mr Fan became a deputy director of the office in May and has been a deputy agriculture minister since December 2000.
