What are the hot picks this summer?

Metallic colours, such as gold and silver, are hot. Both boys and girls should not miss out on these. Leggings are still in for girls. Try to match leggings with one-piece tops, skirts and short pants. Also trendy is 1980s vintage with geometric patterns.

T-shirts are never out for the boys. Rhinestone tees are especially hot this season. You don't have to go for expensive labels to get a Rhinestone tee. There are several stores that offer rhinestone heat transfer techniques, and you can even design your own patterns.

What accessories are in?

Bracelets and necklaces are hot picks, especially those with large, colourful beads. Platform shoes are the thing for girls. Boys who want something special can try pointed shoes. If you don't like showy footwear, go for sneakers - these are always trendy. But whatever the accessories you get, make sure you have something shining and metallic: silver or gold. The metallic trend will last until winter.

Where do you suggest young people go shopping?

There are shopping malls in Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui that target young people. If you are a budget shopper, you could start off by going to brand names stores to get an idea and feel for the latest trends, then go to more affordable stores in places like Mong Kok and Wan Chai for similar but less expensive stuff.

Any tips for looking hip?

Simple wear is the best. You can match simple outfits with exaggerated, eye-catching accessories and hairstyle to bring out your personality.

Remember that fashion is about total image - you shouldn't focus on clothes only. Make note of what the celebrities are wearing. They are sources of fashion information, and they reflect the times and trends.

Do's

Be attentive to the details, such as trouser length and the colour of your socks. Try out different colours. For example, if you are a fan of black, you should also try other colours, such as grey and dark blue.

Don'ts

Pick fashion styles that appeal to you and suit your figure; don't follow trends blindly. For instance, if you are short and petite, don't go for hip hop, which is all about over-sized clothing.
