Alan Leong succeeds in getting the (writing) job done

He lost the election but got a book deal in the process. In time for July 1, Alan Leong Kah-kit has just released a personal memoir called Behind the Pocketchief (published by SCMP Book Publishing). Further, he's contributed to another tome, The Right to Choose, edited by Margaret Ng and Chan Pak-tim. Both books were released yesterday. The election took place in late March, so obviously there wasn't much time left for Leong to write. But he did manage, to quote his rival, to get the job done.

'The original version was revised two or three times and it was put to print just 10 days ago,' he said. 'I want to capture all these experiences while they were still fresh in my mind.'

Obviously, July 1 is a big day for Hong Kong, and the Civic Party legislator has his special memories of this anniversary. 'If you ask me to name one big moment, I'd say it was the first July 1 protest. It was a very clear demonstration by the Hong Kong people and the awakening of the stakeholders of this civil society. It also proved that NGOs and the disadvantaged and underprivileged groups in the lower strata have been ignored by the government.'
