Computer the size of a video tape

Everyone has seen PDAs and mobile phones which try to be more like computers. But this device is a computer trying to be more like PDA.

The Fujitsu U1010 UMPC (which stands for ultra-mobile personal computer) is only the size of a traditional video tape, but offers the full power of a Windows Vista notebook.

To achieve its diminutive size, the U1010 is equipped with a 5.6-inch LCD monitor with 1024 x 600 pixel display resolution, which is touch-sensitive. It flips over to transform the U1010 into a tablet PC.

The keyboard has also been reduced in size by removing of some peripheral keys such as 'Tab'. These functions are now accessed by using the FN (function) button and designated keys.

This means the keys are almost the same size as that of a regular notebook, which is rare among UMPCs.

Fujitsu clearly intends the U1010 to be taken on the road and so has equipped it with all sorts of wireless connectivity, including an integrated 3G SIM card slot for connecting to mobile networks.

It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and traditional wired connections slots.

Extra features include an integrated biometric fingerprint reader for security and a VGA camera for web conferencing or video calling.

On the downside, the U1010 comes with a relatively slow processor at 800MHz, a limited 40GB hard disk drive, and a battery that lasts only two-and-a-half hours.

The U1010 sells for just under HK$10,000.

PROS: Ultra-portable, full featured Windows Vista, near-standard size keys, touch screen, integrated 3G card slot

CONS: slow processor, short battery life
