Welcome to the world of whacky inventions. Discover gadgets and things that some genius once thought the rest of us could not do without. Read on and you will soon be asking yourself: 'Why didn't I think of that?'

The air-con shoe

Wearing shoes in hot weather is often smelly and uncomfortable. It can be like walking around with your feet in an oven. Even trainers make your feet sweaty on hot summer days. What is the answer to this embarrassing and unpleasant problem? Help is at hand with the amazing air-conditioned shoe. Air-con shoes have a small network of heat exchange coils in each heel. Every time you step forward you activate a compression chamber that forces fresh air up into the shoe via a rubber pad in the sole. Problem solved!

No matter how hot the weather, feet stay cool withair-con shoes.

Pogo shoes

As you are pushing your way along crowded pavements, don't you sometimes wish you could take off and jump over the people in front of you? Well, you can if you get yourself a pair of pogo shoes. The idea behind this effective little invention is so simple you will wonder why you didn't think of it yourself. What do you get when you cross a pogo stick and a pair of shoes? That's right, you get pogo shoes. These fun items of footwear are strong boots with a spring-loaded sole that sends you up in the air. The inventor hasn't yet worked out how to build in a safe landing device, so using pogo shoes is still a bit dangerous.

The greenhouse helmet

If you are fed up with breathing polluted air, why not get yourself a greenhouse helmet? This clever item of clothing was invented in the United States and it certainly puts an end to breathing in bad air. The greenhouse helmet is your own personal biosphere, providing an endless supply of pure oxygen for your grateful lungs to enjoy. The helmet is made up of a sealed plastic dome with shelves on the inside on which you can fix plants. Small plants placed next to your ears will provide you with enough pure oxygen to get you through the day. A greenhouse helmet would be a stylish and practical addition to anyone's wardrobe.

The sauna suit

There is nothing more relaxing than lying around in the steam of a sauna. Besides getting rid of stress, half an hour of sweating inside a sauna is good for your body. But who has the spare time to sit in a sauna every day? That's why a sauna suit is the ideal way to relax in your own home. This garment is made of rubber vinyl and it looks like a diving suit. Switch it on, and your body is bathed in soothing steam just like being in a real sauna. You can do other things like reading or watching TV while you are wearing your sauna suit. A book would get very wet if you took it into a sauna, but with a sauna suit, there is no problem.

Ear muffs

Winters in the American state of Maine can be very cold, but when everything freezes over, people rush to the frozen lakes and rivers to skate. Back in 1873, Chester Greenwood looked forward to the winter weather, but there was one problem. He would always wrap himself up in very warm clothes before he went out skating, but he had difficulty keeping his ears warm. One winter day, Greenwood came up with a brilliant idea. He made two loops out of wire and sewed beaver skin on the outside. He then added a piece of wire to fit over his head. He put the loops over his ears, and bingo! His ears stayed as warm as toast all the time he was skating. Greenwood's idea was so good he opened a business and made a comfortable living selling ear muffs the rest of his life.
