China completed their preparations for the Asian Cup finals when they beat Australian League champions Melbourne Victory 1-0 at Siu Sai Wan Stadium last night. The match was played in three periods of 30 minutes with free entrance for fans, although only a few hundred turned up. The three period format was intended to give players a second break in the heat and humidity. Wang Dong headed home from a corner kick for the game's only goal, early in the second period. The mainland's national team came to Hong Kong last week and played in Sunday's Reunification Cup, where they beat a Fifa World Stars team, 2-0. Striker Han Peng said they had acclimatised to the heat since arriving in the SAR and looked forward to the opening group match against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur next Tuesday. The two other teams in the group are Iran and Uzbekistan. The team leave Hong Kong today for Kuala Lumpur with all 25 members, including four goalkeepers and players who have overseas playing experience such as Sun Jihai, Dong Fangzhou, Shao Jiayi, Li Tie and Sun Xiang.
