Supply of live pigs gets worse

The supply of live pigs fell further yesterday, with only 3,500 available, compared with 3,600 on Wednesday. It was down more than 20 per cent on 10 days ago, and for the second straight day there were no live pigs available for morning trade. The Food and Health Bureau has met Ng Fung Hong, the firm that holds the monopoly on live pig imports. The bureau said fresh pork could still be brought in from other countries but noted that 70 per cent of the total consumption was chilled. The Meat Alliance threatened action if the pork market is not opened.
