Pillar talk

Jin Peh

Pillars may be an unavoidable feature of a building's structure, but they are not positive ones and there are clear fung shui guidelines about their position. For instance, the front entrance to your home

or office should not have a pillar directly in front of it. This will block the flow of positive energy towards the property.

Inside your home, there should not be any doors that open directly onto a pillar or the sharp energy it exudes will mix with the energy that enters through the door, adversely affecting the overall nature of the room. This applies to cylindrical and square pillars.

Placing a desk or bed between two pillars is not recommended as it is believed they will exert a 'squeezing effect', resulting in poor concentration or sleep. Sitting parallel to a lone pillar is acceptable. Don't sit at an angle to a square one, though, or its sharp edges will be directed to your side or back, impairing focus and performance.

It is impossible to eliminate structural pillars, so fung shui masters will advise you to relocate your front door or furniture. Screens, plants and fabrics can also be used to cover or camouflage the pillar to reduce its negative effects.
